Requirements for Licensure (Effective April 1, 2009).
Initial Application for Licensure
- Bachelor's Degree in Addiction Studies or a closely related social science or health care field (example: psychology, social work, criminal justice, mental health counseling, nursing, and occupational therapy) including 32 credit hours in addiction studies.
- Academic Requirements (N.D. Admin. Code 4.5-02.1-01-03).
- Completion of 1400-hour board-approved clinical training program.

License by Reciprocity Applicants
If currently licensed in another jurisdiction, and wish to apply for licensure by reciprocity, you must submit the following bulleted items.
PLEASE BE AWARE, licenses from another jurisdiction cannot be simply "transferred" to a North Dakota license. If you choose to apply for licensure by reciprocity, the requirements for licensure in the jurisdiction your are currently licensed in must be the same as North Dakota's requirements for licensure or more stringent (see requirerments listed under Initial Application for Licensure). The time frame for application review may be up to 3 months as applications for licensure by reciprocity must be reviewed by the full board at one of its quarterly meetings. - Verification from the licensing authority in
another jurisdiction that you are currently licensed and in good standing
- Application for Licensure
- Licensure fee
- A copy of the law and rules from the
jurisdiction in which you are licensed which establishes the requirements
for obtaining and maintaining a license in that jurisdiction
