Steps to Obtaining Licensure

1. Complete a baccalaureate degree or higher in ‘Addiction Studies’ or a closely related field, including 32 credit hours in addiction studies course content in Board-specified areas. See N.D. Administrative Code 4.5-02.1-01-03.

2. Complete 1400 hours of clinical training in a Board-approved clinical training program. 

3. Once your clinical training is complete, you may register for intern status in order to practice addiction counseling. The internship may last no longer than two years from the date of registration or until all licensure requirements are met.

4. Request an official copy of your transcript(s) be submitted by the college(s)/university(s) from which your degree was earned.

5. Successfully complete the Board-approved written examination. This exam may be taken during your clinical training.

6. Successfully complete the Board-approved oral examination. This exam can only be taken once your clinical training is complete.

7. Submit the Application for Licensure along with the $150.00 license fee and three letters of recommendation including a present or previous addiction counseling clinical supervisor.
